Numbered 31 in Persian inventory note; inscribed on reverse:’ ‘amal-i gobind rai, shavval sunnah 198’ (the work of Gobind Rai, Shawwal 198 - ie month of Shawwal, in the year AH1198/August-September AD1784).
Gouache with gold; on an album page with narrow gold border and a margin of yellow paper.
225 by 140 mm; page 293 by 192 mm.
Aziz Khan Chaghata sits on a white terrace holding a bow and an arrow dressed totally in white. His sword, spittoon, pan box and ‘katar’ lie on the terrace beside him; there is a grey sky with clouds at the top.
Note: In 1784 Johnson was resident at Hyderabad. Although this picture has a Deccani flavour, it is not in the typical Hyderabad style. It is possible that Gobind Rai adapted the portrait from one of Johnson’s pictures of Aziz Khan brought from Lucknow.
