Gouache with gold; oval with purple surround; on an album leaf with blue border and plain margin.
124 by 96 mm; page 377 by 246 mm.
Reverse: 15 lines of Arabic ‘naskhi’ calligraphy from a manuscript; 18th century.
The emperor, three-quarter length facing right, holds a composite orange flower. He is dressed in a brown jama, with a gold halo; green background.
Note: This is based upon an accession portrait of Shah Jahan painted by Nadir al-Zaman (Sotheby, 26 March 1973, lot 3). Another version is in the British Museum, 1969-3-17-01 (Ashton (1950), no.753; Pinder-Wilson (1976), no.135).
