Numbered 8 in Persian inventory note; numbered 27 on border.

Gouache with gold; on a 17th-century Mughal album leaf with gilt-decorated borders and a margin decorated in gold with animals in landscapes.

182 by 131 mm; page 348 by 240 mm.

Reverse: part of a ‘ghazal’ of Hafiz written in ‘nasta‘liq’ calligraphy on a marbled background; 16th or 17th century.

The prince kneels in discussion with the hermit beneath a tall tree. In the foreground the retinue of the prince bring gifts to a shrine which is situated at the source of a river.
