Numbered 6 in Persian inventory note; numbered ‘28’ on border of reverse.
Gouache with gold; on a 17th-century Mughal album leaf with gilt-decorated borders and a margin decorated in gold with elephants and huntsmen in a landscape.
191 by 117 mm; page 320 by 215 mm.
Reverse: two specimens of ‘nasta‘liq’ calligraphy: (i) four ‘baits’ of an Arabic poem, with a versified Persian translation in a smaller hand; signed: ‘‘Abd al-Rahman Kashmiri’ and dated AH992/AD1584; (ii) three ‘baits’ of a Turki ‘qasidah’ written diagonally; signed: ‘Muhammad Qasim ibn Khwajaqa’; 16th century.
A prince, seated in a pavilion within a palace courtyard, receives a cup of wine from one of his six female attendants. At the gateway in the foreground men arrive with covered dishes.
