Richard Johnson Collection. Purchased 1807.
Gouache with gold; on album pages with gilt-sprinkled and florally decorated borders.
Note: These eight paintings are additions made at Lucknow to complete the series of ‘ragamala’ illustrations making up the remainder of Johnson Album 30, which are from Bikaner c.1650. They comply with the Ordinary system on grounds of subject, but the identifications are not confirmed by inscriptions on any of the pictures. Although the style of painting is essentially that of Lucknow, some effort has been made to approximate the pictures to the mid-seventeenth-century Bikaner style of the remainder of the album.
