Four illustrations of the avatar’s’ of Visnu.
Commissioned by Richard Johnson, Lucknow, c.1780-82.
Richard Johnson Collection. Purchased 1807.
Persian descriptions of the subjects on the reverse of each album page.
Coloured drawings; on album pages with gilt-sprinkled mauve and plain borders.
Page 333 by 248 mm.
Note: These four illustrations were made at Lucknow to complete the set of ten illustrations of which six (J.48, 2-5, 7 and 10) are in the Amber style of c.1720. The style of these four is that associated with the studio where the artists Udwat Singh, Ghulam Reza, Gobind Singh and Mohan Singh worked(cf. 34, 42, 44 and 54). The series was probably completed and mounted in this way especially for Johnson. The album in which the entire album was originally contained had a fly-leaf on which the names of the avatar’s’ were listed in nagari characters, each accompanied by the relevant Sanskrit couplet.
