Two women conversing
- Scope & Content:

Two women conversing.
Hyderabad, c.1740-50.
Richard Johnson Collection. Purchased 1807.
Inscribed on reverse in Persian with a couplet in which a beautiful woman is likened to the moon; priced in ‘raqam.’
Gouache with gold; border of green-stencilled paper.
215 by 150 mm; page 273 by 195 mm.
A young lady attended by two maids reclines on a bed beneath a canopy in the moonlight, while a duenna in white stoops to talk to her, and two cranes fly overhead.
Note: The subject could be an unidentified’ ragini.’ Stylistically the picture contrasts with Album 37. Here the faces of the girls are less refined, and the entire approach more bold, demonstrated by the vigour with which the wind flutters the fringe of the canopy.
