Flowering plant
- Scope & Content:
-
A flowering plant.
Deccan, c.1700-1720.
Richard Johnson Collection. Purchased 1807.
Inscribed above in Persian: ‘tasvir-i shir dakan’ (a Deccan picture of a lion) - referring to the lion in the marbled picture on the other side of the page; price in ‘raqam’; on reverse: Persian inventory note (not numbered).
Gouache; plain border.
238 by 135 mm; page 296 by 195 mm.
Reverse: a square seal is illegible; an oval seal of Hajji(?) Muhammad Mu’min beneath. The marbled picture of a lion is described in Robinson (1976), no.142. There is a case for believing that such marbled pictures were made in the Deccan according to a tradition borrowed from Turkey. For other examples, ‘see’ Martin (1912), pl.231; Sotheby, 1 December 1969, lot 111; Binney (1973), no.129; Welch (1976), nos.34 and 35.
A flowering plant with a single stem bearing leaves and pink flowers and buds.
