Inscribed at top in Persian: ‘shabeh-i rai dal chand musavvir’ (a likeness of the artist Rai Dal Chand); beneath: ‘‘amal-i mohan singh’ (the work of Mohan Singh); Persian inventory note (not numbered).
‘Charba’; laid down on card-backed paper; the picture completed in pencil beyond the extent of the ‘charba.’
100 by 68 mm, extended to 152 by 96 mm; page 238 by 160 mm.
The artist Rai Dal Chand kneels facing right, holding a bottle and small dish. He is bearded and wears a turban banded in orange and gold.
Note: The tracing is taken from a Mughal portrait of some decades before. The artist Dal Chand was active at Delhi in the first half of the eighteenth century and visited Jodhpur where he painted an equestrian portrait of Abhai Singh (1725-50) (‘see’ Ashton (1950), no.431).
