Najm al-Din 'Ali Khan. Artist(s): Kalyan Das 'Chitarman' (fl.mid 18th century)
- Scope & Content:

Najm al-Din ‘Ali Khan.
By Kalyan Das, Mughal, c.1750.
Richard Johnson Collection. Purchased 1807.
Inscribed above in Persian: ‘shabeh-i najm al-din ‘ali khan ibn sayyid ‘abdallah khan’ (a likeness of Najm al-Din ‘Ali Khan son of Sayyid ‘Abdallah Khan); numbered 48 in Persian inventory note (repeated on slip of paper on reverse); beneath: ‘‘amal-i chitarman ‘arf kalyan das’ (the work of Chitarman known as Kalyan Das).
Drawing, only the head finished in colours; plain paper border.
201 by 141 mm; page 251 by 170 mm.
The bearded Najm al-Din ‘Ali Khan kneels facing right, with a cushion across his lap and a bolster behind him. His jewelled turban is predominantly gold and pink.
Note: The inscription as it stands is ambiguous. The artist’s proper name was evidently Kalyan Das, ‘Chitarman’ being an honorific stemming from the seventeenth-century Mughal artist of that name. Najm al-Din ‘Ali Khan Barah was a brother of Husain ‘Ali Khan Amir al-Umara (no.156). He was appointed governor of Gwalior (Shah Nawaz Khan (1911-52), II, 376).
