Bahadur Khan Chaghata.
By Jagnath, Lucknow, c.1775-80.
Richard Johnson Collection. Purchased 1807.
Inscribed at top in Persian: ‘shabeh-i nawab sahib vaqilah khudaigan umdah al-mulk bahadur khan chaghata / ‘amal-i jagnath’ (a likeness of Nawab Sahib Waqilah Khudaigan Umdah al-Mulk Bahadur Khan Chaghata, the work of Jagnath); Persian inventory note (not numbered).
Drawing with wash; on paper with extensions at sides.
218 by 117 mm; page 218 by 147 mm.
Umdah al-Mulk Bahadur Khan Chaghata, with neatly cut full beard, stands facing right, wearing a mid-length jama with short ‘patka’ and with a sword and shield at his side.
Note: This is the only picture in the collection which has an attribution to Jagnath, and being only a drawing it does not reveal his full style. As a portrait it does not differ appreciably from the work of his contemporaries at Lucknow. The identity of Bahadur Khan Chaghata is uncertain, but from his facial characteristics he is clearly not the same man as the Aziz Khan Chaghata of J.25, 8, etc.
