Inscribed on border in Persian characters: ‘tasvir-i filan-i jangi, ‘amal-i humhar’ (a picture of fighting elephants, the work of Hunhar) - this attribution is unreliable.
Gouache with gold; gilt-decorated panels flanking miniature; inner blue border and plain outer border.
128 by 165 mm; page 378 by 250 mm.
Reverse: four lines of ‘thulth’ and’ naskhi’ calligraphy by Muhammad Ziya, written in gold on blue paper, within green-tinted borders; 18th century.
The elephants, each mounted by two riders, and with tusks cut to half-length, have red cloths draped over the top of their heads. In the foreground is a water-carrier and three bearers of catherine-wheels; yellow background.
