Inscribed incorrectly below in Persian: ‘‘amal-i nadir al-zaman’ (the work of Nadir al-Zaman); numbered 1 in Persian inventory note.

Drawing with gold; inner border of gilt decoration on blue, outer border tinted mauve.

158 by 112 mm; page 415 by 280 mm.

Reverse: a quatrain of ‘nasta‘liq’ calligraphy on a gilt floral background, within blue and plain borders; 17th century.

A large elephant stands beneath a canopy, with his keeper seated upon him, and gold chains and bells attached to his harness and feet. Two smaller elephants are on the right and a party of admirers enters from the left, while a bullock and a watercarrier fill troughs in the foreground.

Note: The composition and the costume of the figures show that this is based on a Bijapur original of the earlier seventeenth century.
