Inscribed at bottom corner in Persian: ‘Nadir al-Zaman’ (an incorrect attribution); numbered 14 in Persian inventory note.

Gouache with uncoloured background; gilt-decorated blue inner border, gilt-sprinkled outer border.

163 by 118 mm; page 415 by 287 mm.

An elephant, harnessed with gold straps and bells, lifts a boulder and chain above its head for its mahout who reaches forward to grasp the boulder; the other end of the chain is attached to the right foreleg. Two trees are behind, one in blossom.

Note: The style is close to the contemporary Bijapuri artist Farrukh Husain. A drawing of elephants fighting by him is in the Binney Collection (Binney (1973), no.124; Welch (1976), no.33).
