Portrait of the Hungarian statesman facing right and wrapped in a cape. Stamped with 'Henneman & Co.' on verso. Paper trimmed to image. The photograph is referred to in a letter by Prof. John Kidd (LA51-068) and in an unsent letter by Talbot to Robert Hunt, written on the 7th November 1851, where he writes, 'On Tuesday Governor Kossuth made an appointment to sit for his portrait...The hour of noon was appointed fixed upon, but the illustrious Magyar did not appear until nearly 3 clock[.] This was putting the powers of photography to a severe test on a hazy November afternoon, nevertheless a fair portrait was obtained, of which I understand that numerous copies will be published next week, entering exclusively for the benefit of the Hungarian refugees. I shall have the pleasure of presenting you with a copy.' [The Correspondence of William Henry Fox Talbot, Document number: 6507. RPS Collection, Bradford.]
