Inscription: Signed 'Ross & Thomson' in red pencil at bottom right of print
Genre: Landscape Photography
Close-up of plants, with a coat draped over the wooden fence in the background and a spade leaning against it. With some retouching on spade shaft. This photograph may be one of numerous plant studies by Ross and Thomson shown at the Photographic Society Exhibition, London in 1858 and at the British Association, Aberdeen, Exhibition of 1859. The photograph was presumably sent to Talbot by the Edinburgh firm. Talbot's correspondence contains three letters from Ross and Thomson: the first, dated 11 August 1862, solicits Talbot's help in reversing a decision of the jury at the International Exhibition relating to their photographs (at which, apparently in error, their entry was not listed). Two further letters (11 August and 8 September 1862) enclose photographs, of instantaneous portraits of children and 'a few negatives taken quickly.' This plant study is not mentioned, but the firm may well have sent additional photographs.
