Heliographed engraving from a daguerreotype by Dr Christian Joseph von Berres (1796-1844), cropped and laid down on paper mount. Signed inscription under image in ink. Image size 103 x 121 mm, press imprint size 109 x 164 mm, paper size 198 x 284 mm. Horizontal scratch marks, paper severely foxed.
This image is reproduced and discussed in Carolyn Bloore, Photography and printmaking 1840-1860 (University of Reading:1991). For Berres' own account of his early experiments in printing from daguerreotype images, with examples, see his very rare booklet, Phototyp nach der Erfindung des Professor Berres in Wien (Vienna: 1840), British Library shelfmark 1269.e.26.
