- Title:
- No. 2: Letter from Sir Charles Wood
- Scope & Content:
-
Writes that he has not seen Dalhousie, who is ill. Is glad that peace with Russia has been made, he does not think the Alliance would have lasted after taking Sebastopol. It would have been very difficult to create an independent state in Georgia. Acquiesces in Canning's views on Kandahar. Believes the Afghans should be backed against the Russians. Auckland was right in his views, though wrong in his methods. Murray has done nothing but mischief since he reached Persia, though he was warned beforehand. Wood has never doubted the right of the Legislative Council to act contrary to the wishes of the Government but is annoyed at their beginning to act so soon in a political matter, regarding the proceedings over the Sootas. It would be better to manage the Legislative Council than to take violent measures. Lieutenant Stanhope is promoted. Granville is to go to St Petersburg as Coronation Ambassador. Wodehouse is to be Minister. Wood is tempted by Canning's invitation to visit India, but feels too old. Asks about the education scheme.
