Writes that it is settled that Elgin is to succeed Canning. Canning will well understand Elgin's feelings. Elgin would be glad to know of any matters he should attend to, before leaving England. Asks for a list of the household things Canning intends to dispose of, and for information about what he should bring, especially what servants. He is in great perplexity about Lady Elgin, who must leave either her children or her husband; probably she will not come out at first. Asks how many maids has Lady Canning with her. Elgin hopes he will not have to leave before Christmas. Regrets Lord Herbert's sudden death. His death and the elevation of Earl Russell have thrown a good deal of confusion into the Government
