- Title:
- No. 20: Letter from Colonel William H. Sykes
- Scope & Content:
-
Reports on the feasibility of establishing a pure gold currency in India, to relieve the ceaseless drain of silver from Europe for the East. Asks for the Governor General's opinion on the feasibility of introducing the tunic into the Indian Army in place of the coatee. A Despatch on Medical Reform will soon be sent, chief changes mentioned. The Oudh family have asked for an audience. The Court may have to raise their rate of exchange shortly. Lord Clarendon approves of General Outram's future plans for the campaign. All this trouble comes from the petulance and want of tact of one man.
Encloses two papers: 1. 'Statement of the cost of adopting the tunic in lieu of the present coatee according to the estimated rates as furnished from each Presidency'.
2. 'Comparative Statement of the gross revenue of Bombay, Madras, Bengal, North West Provinces & Punjab, and the amount of expenditure on sanctioned Works for 1855-56'.
