Canning's account of the diminution of the financial deficit came in time to meet Sir E Perry's motion; Gladstone is finding fault with Indian finance, he is very hostile to the administration. The weakest point in the Oudh papers is the neglect of the Treaty of 1837, which, although distinctly refused by Hobhouse in the letters of the Secret Committee, seems to have been considered as in existence by both Captain Hayes and Sleeman. Remarks on a Naval Review. General Vivian has been made a Director. Sykes and Mangles make an awkward pair; warns Lord Canning of Sykes indiscretion. He hears all India is delighted with Lady Canning. Concludes that as soon as peace is ratified, saltpetre may be exported from India.
