- Title:
- No. 30: Letter from Robert Vernon Smith
- Scope & Content:
-
Thanks Lord Canning for his Minutes and papers upon Afghanistan. Believes that it is safer not to have the whole of that country under one ruler. There is still no certain news from China. Hopes that Canning will be satisfied with what has been one about steamers. Has heard from General Grant about the regiments in Pegu, to the same effect as Canning heard from Brigadier Hanscombe. It is a point that deserves attention, together with the affair of the cartridges, both showing uneasiness in the army. He hopes the cartridges will convince General Anson that the superstitions of the sepoys are not to be slighted, at first he was rather incredulous. Will be glad to hear if Canning has any further reason to suppose the Oudh family have instigated the revolt, as the Queen is anxious to show favour to the Princes in England. Hopes for Canning's reply to the Oudh Memorial to the Queen. He is told there is complaint about the disposal of their papers and property at Lucknow. Various journals speak of a disagreement between the Home Government and Canning; both he and Colonel Sykes know nothing of this. Sykes has left the Chair and is now an M.P. Her Majesty has not yet begun her 9th labour, which is delaying the politicians in town. Peacock does not necessarily retire in May, but continues if not superseded. Vernon Smith still wishes to abolish his office eventually.
