- Title:
- No. 30: Letter from Ross D. Mangles
- Scope & Content:
-
Has heard of the news of the murderous attack on the Adjutant of the 34th by one of his sepoys, and the disbandment of the 19th Native Infantry. All agree about the wisdom of the Governor General's measures, and hopes the lesson will be long remembered. It is very discouraging to find that though the sepoys and their fathers have served the Government as soldiers for nearly a century, and have been treated well, they should believe any false report as to the acts of Government. No pains should be spared to find out where, how, and by whom the lies were originally coined and spread. The 34th Native Infantry should be severely punished; but that is left to the discretion of the Governor General. Two steamers have been bought for India. The long-awaited Report on the iron ores of Kumaon has not yet been received. Asks for the proceedings of the Legislative Council to be transmitted by every mail. Has had a letter from Mr Ricketts, waiving his right to a seat on the Supreme Council of India; will nominate General Outram to the vacancy which may be caused by the resignation of General Low. Hopes Outram will get the GCB. The Indian Army is being compared favourably with the Queen's Army.
