-
Complains that the non-arrival of the Calcutta letters has caused great anxiety in England, because of the scrap of news relating to the mutiny at Meerut. Such scanty information involving the lives of officers should not be forwarded to England. The 'Dalhousie' troop ship sailed for India on 17 Jun and will be followed by the 'Prince Arthur' in the first week of July. Comments on the debates in the House of Commons on the missionaries petition, and on cotton. The present House is more reasonable than the dissolved House, Messrs Bright, Otway and Phillimore having been got rid of. Lord Clanricarde creates trouble in the House of Lords on Indian affairs as unhappily no member of the Government in the Lords possesses the necessary information to expose his misrepresentations. Asks if it would be possible to have monthly returns of the principal imports and exports of Calcutta, Madras and Bombay.
