- No. 41: Letter from Ross D. Mangles
- Scope & Content:
-
Reports the good news received from India; also the death of Mr Colvin, and the offer of the Lieutenant Governor's post, North West Provinces, to Sir John Lawrence. Is anxious for news of the Lucknow Garrison, and the Delhi casualties. Writes of Lord Granville's admirable defence of the Indian administration at a Mansion House dinner; the speech was dishonestly reported by 'The Times'. The press of India and England is still vindictive. The latest topic is the alleged release by John P Grant of some 150 of Brigadier Neill's prisoners. The present difficulty of monetary affairs in England is greatly increased by the monthly remittance of bullion to India. Various financial suggestions made. Western Australia and British Guiana will accept convicts and mutineers with their families. Suggests arrangements for accommodating troops. Reports measures for applying chaplains. The Bengal Felice draft, and the Despatch asking for an explanation of the Governor General's Circular Order, will go by the present mail. He has every confidence in the Governor General's judgement.
