- Title:
- No. 46a: Extract of letter from Lord Palmerston to Robert Vernon Smith
- Scope & Content:
-
Asks Vernon Smith to tell Canning that he has heard that a geography book intended for a school in Bengal was objected to by a Hindu, because the geographic theory therein was opposed to the Hindu religion, and thereupon the book was withdrawn by order of Government. This is too absurd to be true, but there is probably some grounds for the statement. A strong hand is needed in dealing with both Hindu and Mahomedans over religion.
