- No. 47: Letter from Robert Vernon Smith
- Scope & Content:
-
Reports gloom at Havelock's death, and distrust of Wyndham. Says in reply that recommendations for several orders must be made publicly. Agrees with Canning about giving offence to the religions, he meant the extinction of every vestige of Mahomedan reign, not religion. He believes the coins of the King of Delhi still circulate in Central India. Trusts that Canning will be very slow to make promises about compensation, and refer for orders home. Has seen Canning's comments upon the petition for his recall, which will be presented to Parliament as soon as it meets. He wishes for any anecdotes of how the petition was got up. The question of the Suez passage is nearly settled. Mentions reinforcements for Bombay. He hopes that now that Sir Colin Campbell has defeated the Gwalior Contingent, he will not think of leaving Oudh any more. Has no doubt that, with reference to Jung Bahadoor, Canning acted for the best, but he deeply regrets the necessity. Asks what is to be done with the loyal Native princes. Some state necessity has been invented to keep the King of Delhi at the Cape. The short session of Parliament passed successfully, and the storms raised against Canning are abated, people are beginning to appreciate a Governor General who is not so excitable or so bombastic as Ellenborough. Asks for Canning's opinion on the re-organisation [of the Government of India from England].
