Writes of the surprise overthrow of the Government. The Directors' stock has risen, they are breakfasting and lunching at East India House as usual, but are alarmed by Ellenborough. It is the talk of the Clubs that Canning will resign or be recalled, and he wishes to give Canning his own opinion. He believes that Canning must first consider the public interests. Public opinion which was so unjust to Canning in the autumn is now much altered. There is also the chance that the new Ministry may not last. The causes which might lead to Canning's resignation are more obvious and personal, the offensive tone of Lord Derby and Lord Ellenborough, and the difficulty of working with such a President and Cabinet. Comments on the appointment of Elphinstone as Provisional Governor General. Writes in confidence that the Reverend E Cotton has been made Bishop of Calcutta. The Queen had heard some reports of Archdeacon Pratt having used intemperate language about the natives. Hopes that Canning will continue to write to him; expresses his admiration of the Governor General, almost alone he saved the Empire in India, and this judgement will one day be confirmed by the British public and in the pages of Oriental history.
