He will watch anxiously events in the Punjab after the Dehra Ismael Khan business. Nothing can be done in England, except to send fresh European troops. Canning is at least forewarned against trouble from the Sikhs. The other news is satisfactory, and he hopes for the restoration of order by spring. The Commission on Indian Army affairs was decided upon long before Stanley went to the India Board, and he assumed that Canning knew of it. It is to collect evidence rather than to reorganise, for that is a question for Government. Canning's collected information will be awaited before anything is done. Asks about the feeling in the Indian Army on the transfer to the Crown. Thinks the Indian Army officers must be kept separate from the English officers, but that the Commander in Chief must have control over the Indian Army. Private.
