Lord Stanley will not take the settlement of Duleep Sing's affairs out of Canning's hands, unless he is about to leave for India or some such urgent reason. He has not yet been able to fill up any of the vacant seats on the judicial Bench. Agitation against the religious neutrality principle of Indian Government, in educational and missionary matters, is threatened, but does not think it will come to much. The trial at Madras has had a good effect. Stanley is inquiring into the whole subject of education, especially with reference to grants in aid. The question of compensation for losses incurred in the rebellion is certain to be raised in Parliament: he hopes for an assurance from India that claims are being investigated. Private.
