Will not fill up the Provisional vacancy on the Calcutta Council until he hears from Canning. Durand has applied for the post, but Stanley has told him the State expects more active service from him. Canning's explanation about the Lucknow Regiment is completely satisfactory, Stanley merely wished to be prepared with answers to any possible objections that may be raised. He will write to Lord Cowley about D'Orgoni who seemed very vain but not dangerous. Has written officially about the State prisoners, as there will be questions asked in Parliament. Private.
