- Title:
- 108. Letter from Lord Stanley
- Scope & Content:
-
Remarks that the Dissolution will give him a chance to clear off arrears of business. Lawrence has come to England, and has taken his seat in Council. There is a party which has taken up his cause, not because he helped to save India but because he wants the Bible introduced into Government schools. These people are anxious to monopolise him, and to make capital out of his name. Stanley will work against them by joining in their demonstrations in his honour. Lawrence looks well and is little altered, but says he only wants to rest. Stanley has appointed a special committee of Council to investigate claims for honours for service not in the field, some further information may be required from Canning though there is a good deal of material in England. There is a desire for a Commission to investigate the mortality of the European troops in India, if it is true that Sidney Herbert wishes to take the chair of such a Commission Stanley will probably consent to it. War seems more and more inevitable. The Austrians were not the aggressors, but are now quite as unmanageable as the French. This will solve the problem of the return of troops from India. Has been glad to propose the Vote of Thanks to Canning in Parliament, and to silence once for all reports of misunderstanding and coldness between Stanley and Canning. There has been hardly any outcry against the proposed increase of customs duties. Private.
