Reports that Mansfield is to be sent to China as well as Grant, as the French have three Generals there. Bruce will be with the Expeditionary Force and should be able to make matters work smoothly. The French are apprehensive of differences, and he hopes will impress the necessity of cordiality on their officers. The Duke of Cambridge and Herbert are against displacing Hope Grant. The British will clearly be superior in numbers: discusses details. The French have no cavalry, which will put the British in a position of relative superiority. Mansfield on his return may have Bombay, or Madras when Grant leaves. Signed but not written by Sir Charles Wood: marked 'a duplicate of a letter gone via Calcutta'.
