Asks the Government of India to deal quickly with the Madras Government's request for an increase of Police. Harris had been told that the new Police law would be passed in Feb. His Chief Magistrate and Superintendent of Police is leaving at the end of Apr and he has no one to replace him. Will appoint only a Superintendent of Police, who will become Commissioner as soon as the Act is passed. Hopes that Canning is settling into his post. He is sorry that Lady Canning has had an accident, and hopes it is true that she was uninjured. Asks if Lady Canning took away with her by mistake some drawings by Burgess.
