The Government of Madras has sent some papers on Tanjore affairs. There has been a leakage of information, Mr Norton knew of the decision on the Raj as soon as the decision was forwarded to the Government of India. It is said he was sent a Blue Book, with passages marked; he is said to be in constant communication with Danby Seymour. Vernon Smith has written that he has reason to suppose that natives were not treated in Madras with proper respect by officials, and sent an extract from a private letter. Harris has explained the matter as far as he could, and asked that if this kind of thing is to continue, that names might be given, and complainants required to lay charges. The information in the past of this kind had been sent to Danby Seymour by a set of intriguers: had hoped this kind of thing had stopped. Would like the matter to be noticed officially. Asks Canning to tear up this letter after reading it, unless he requires it.
