Harris is glad that Canning agrees about Vernon Smith's statement; the Home authorities now insist that an act be passed. Tanjore and Arcot affairs are progressing satisfactorily: Norton is said to be coming out violently on Tanjore. Forbes the Commissioner has taken possession of the jewels. Harris is increasingly disgusted by the conduct of the people at home. Hears that the Police proposal is sanctioned, and the Survey. Is pleased with the state of the country through which he is passing. Has also enjoyed travelling simply, though the nights are disturbed because every village greets him with music. Begs Canning not to work too hard. Does not know what to do about Haig. Asks if Canning has seen the papers in the quarrel Plowden v. Power[?]. Sends a letter to be forwarded to Mrs Anson.
