After finishing his last letter, Harris learnt that there is likely to be a good deal of difficulty about the Tanjore affairs. On being formally told that the Raj was extinct the family, which had before divided into two parties each with a candidate for King combined and appointed Norton their agent. The Commissioner had in the meantime taken possession of the Crown property. Norton claims it all for the widow, and has applied to the Supreme Court to inhibit the Government from touching it. The whole case has been sent up to Calcutta. If Canning can find a good man to act as Advocate General in Madras, Harris would have no objection. Norton might still be in Government service, if his increase in salary, which has just been authorised 20 months after it was applied for, had been granted earlier.
