- Title:
- 11. Letter from Lord Harris
- Scope & Content:
-
Thanks Canning for his letter, is glad that their views coincide on the Tanjore matter. There has been some trouble, does not know if it could have been avoided. Thanks Canning for sending Mr Cowie, lack of professional advice has been a great trouble. Arcot affairs may also be difficult, perhaps trouble can be avoided by passing some special measure. Suggests that the Arcot Musnud be declared extinct. Norton is said to have given up the Raj of Tanjore, his sole object being to get enough money to go home and into Parliament. It is disgustingly dirty work. With British notions of justice, the rights of men and so on, as much infamous behaviour is allowed to go on in the British Empire as in the worst of Governments. Asks if the papers on the Travancore Commission have reached Canning. Hopes Canning is well. Asks how the reinforcements for Bushire are being found, and if troops will be needed for China. Has sent an introduction for a Cavalry cadet named Macnabb, son of Lord Hastings' Private Secretary and a relation of Harris.
