Some further papers have been sent up on Tanjore, but should not affect the Governor General's conclusions. Wishes the liberality of Government were not to be wasted on those who fall into the hands of scoundrels. The Company's solicitor is pressing for action in the Arcot affair, as the late Nawab's creditors are becoming very impatient. There is no doubt that his private property would not meet his debts. Doubts whether he should have recommended Government to undertake to liquidate the late Nawab's debts at all. Has sent some coal to Bombay at the request of Lord Elphinstone. Wishes to know if the two Deputy Superintendents of Police for the town of Madras will be allowed to count their previous service for pension. Asks for a telegraphic reply, because the uncertainty is preventing the appointment of Commissioners. Bourdillon, Harris' best man, is going home sick. Forbes will come from Tanjore to replace Bourdillon. Believes it is possible that the Legislative Member for Madras will go home on leave, asks if he should be replaced by an Acting Member.
