- Title:
- 20. Letter from Lord Harris
- Scope & Content:
-
An express has been sent to prevent Mr Ritchie leaving for Madras, because the Tanjore suit is postponed. More Europeans are wanted at Hyderabad and Madras, but they cannot come for a long time. The Mussulmen are getting more and more bumptious and are plotting an outbreak if they have a chance. There is reason to believe that constant communications are carried between Madras, Hyderabad, Cudalapah, Bangalore, Mysore, Vellore, Arcot and Trichinopoly, the object being to restore the Nawab of the Carnatic. So the British are trying to make a scapegoat of Canning, an infamous and ridiculous attempt. The telegraph to Mhow has reopened. Some of the telegraph officers were killed at Indore, but the residents there are said to be safe. The Rohillas have been driven out of the Presidency. Hopes Lady Canning is well. The struggle is one for truth and freedom, whatever it may made to appear. Observes that the Court Martial Act now applies to Bombay and Madras, but why is it not extended to everywhere else. He will be glad to hear that his children have left Egypt.
