- Title:
- 21. Letter from Lord Harris
- Scope & Content:
-
Thanks the Governor General for sending the Europeans, who were much needed. Everyone applies for Europeans, the Resident at Hyderabad asks for them in great numbers. Harris realises the importance of Hyderabad but does not agree that the peace of Southern India depends upon his Residency. A Moveable Column has been formed to look to the peace of the Presidency, under Brigadier Whitelock. Describes the formation of the Column. Will send the Brigade of Madras troops as soon as possible, though he has not very great confidence in them. Cavalry horses will be sent also. The few draught horses have been given to a Battery at Madras, but if Canning wants them still they shall be sent. Suggests that carriage horses in Calcutta be taken for the Artillery. Stores and harness will be sent. The Bombay Government has also made requisitions for supplies, including 60,000,000 caps for the Punjab. Fears that Mr Ritchie will have to return with the Tanjore case unsettled, for the lawyers on the other side intend to act slowly to draw more money from their clients. Ritchie agrees that the Carnatic affairs should be postponed during the crisis; the Mahomedans in Madras believe that the Musnud is to be restored. There is some plotting at Masulipatam, precautions have been taken. The British will not take the commonest precautions; and at the same time panic. If there is not a row at the Mohurrum, it will not be the fault of the Europeans. Asks how Canning proposes to stop the introduction of pamphlets printed in England reflecting on the Indian Government Asks if Canning still believes Holkar is faithless, Harris has seen some private accounts which seem to show that he was shaken or doubtful at first, but soon recovered himself. Local Regiments and a Militia for Madras are being raised. Wonders if reinforcements can be expected from England by July. Lord Panmure deserves censure for putting off the departure of the reliefs and recruits. Lord Seymour is leaving for Calcutta, he seems an odd creature. Names Lieutenant Parry, a son of the Bishop of Barbados, who has a letter of introduction to Canning's Private Secretary. Comments on the slowness of the 'Semiramis' who has strained her keel.
