- Title:
- 30. Letter from Lord Harris
- Scope & Content:
-
Madras will do its best with the troops available. There was some confusion at Galle. Describes troop movements, and the composition of the force for Central India, which will be under Whitlock, by far the best soldier, though eccentric. There was some trouble with the 50th, now settled. The Madras Government is not longing to have Saugor, but it fits on well to Nagpore. Harris stated the number of European Regiments he thought necessary, but would try to hold Saugor with half the number. News has come of fighting at Lucknow, and of Campbell being wounded. A private letter says the rebels have been beaten, and the women and children are on their way to Cawnpore. All right thinking men will be disgusted with the conduct of some of the Calcutta people towards Canning. Is distressed at the thought of the heavy work before Canning. Sir Patrick Grant regrets that he appeared annoyed about the 38th. The Government of Madras wishes to press on with the Carnatic Bill, but before it becomes public to carry out a registry of arms in Madras. Whitlock's last report was very favourable. Sees by the papers that there is trouble at Dacca and Chittagong. Hears that Madras is to have the 3rd Battalion of the 60th, which is more than expected. Harris is being attacked by the newspapers for his Minute. The Captain of the 'Khersonese' is anxious about the 'Queen of the South', with the 66th on board, who should have arrived.
