He will await Canning's summons to Calcutta, as his brother will probably be allowed to remain at Madras. Sends copies of a circular he has sent round to ascertain what military force is necessary for the Presidency. Asks Canning to direct the Residents or Political Agents of territories in the Madras area to make similar returns. Lady Denison and five children have gone to England, Lady Denison will return in Nov but the Governor will be separated from his children for a long time. Hears that Lady Canning is making a collection of dried ferns, offers to obtain some from Australasia and the South Sea Islands.
Enclosed: Four printed questionnaires to the Police, District Engineers, Collectors on the population of areas, their character, their arms, the physical character of the country, the communications, the position of the District Treasury and the money therein, and the position of Jails and the number of prisoners therein.
