- Title:
- 67. Letter from Sir William Denison
- Scope & Content:
-
Will send a statement of his opinion of Sheodasheoghur and the work to be done there, which should be completed in time for the shipment of the cotton crop. He cannot see the least reason why the district should be transferred to Bombay. It will never be a very busy harbour, being shut in by Goa to the north and 70 miles from the cotton districts to the rear. No large expenditure of money will be required. Denison is well, but his Private Secretary has had fever. Off Canara the very sea stank. Sends a copy of a letter on the Godavery works. Some additions to the works are necessary, and there will be some awkward questions to settle with the Nizam. Denison has heard a rumour that Canning intends to visit the Godavery, warns him against this as the country is very unhealthy and there is little to see.
Enclosed: Copy of a letter from Denison to Colonel Sir Arthur Cotton, Engineers, 28 Oct, regretting that Cotton has had to go to England on grounds of health. Denison has great confidence in Haig, and will help him as much as he can. He may add to Haig's estimates. Does not agree with Cotton that the Godavery works should be hurried on and improved later. Discusses the details of some of the cuts and canals round the three barriers. Care will have to be taken whenever the Nizam's territory is involved.
