- Title:
- 70. Letter from Sir William Denison
- Scope & Content:
-
Anderson has been to see Denison, and they have discussed cinchona at length. Anderson has told Denison much that he did not know about the trees and the manufacture of quinine, which should be done on the spot. After another talk with Anderson he should know approximately how many acres of cinchona should be planted by Government. If McIvor opposes the cinchona scheme he will have to go. Writes about Mysore: the Rajah is anxious to have the handling of the balances in his Treasury, and the management of his own Territory. Suggests these might be conceded to him on condition that he does not adopt an heir to his Territory. Asks if Canning is aware that Europeans who visit Hyderabad are ill treated and spat upon, because the Nizam has so little control over his subjects, suggests that he is not fit to be trusted with a Contingent. Denison would like to see a Madras force instead of the Contingent, and a Citadel erected within cannon shot of Hyderabad to cover the Treasury and military stores, and keep the city in entire subjection.
