Gives his opinion of Colonel Cameron; he is an active sharp fellow, but very conceited. Cameron was in Georgia and Circassia when Lord Clanricarde was Ambassador at St Petersburg, Canning could obtain information from Clanricarde. Elphinstone has written to Vernon Smith and Lord Clarendon, and told them it was too late to send an expedition to the Persian Gulf before the monsoon. Nanayen Dajee was recently offered 250 Rupees a month to go to Sind to photograph the old Mahometan buildings, but refused. Agrees with Erskine about the educational staff, if professors are to be sent out they should be good ones. The educational report for the present year will be discouraging, partly owing to a change in the examination system. Private.
