- Title:
- 23. Letter from Lord Elphinstone
- Scope & Content:
-
Has received the telegraph from Canning authorising him to prepare an expedition on the scale proposed by Sir Henry Somerset in his memorandum of 8 Aug minus the Dragoons and one Battery of Artillery. Somerset is very anxious that the Dragoons should be sent, as the Persian Cavalry are very good, and the Dragoons would give confidence to the Native Cavalry. Elphinstone has telegraphed about the transports. Thanks Canning for the 'Feroze'. Bombay will now have seven steamers of the Indian Navy, or eight, if the 'Auckland' returns from Singapore, and two if not three steamers of the Peninsular and Oriental Company. Preparations are going on quietly, but it is beginning to be generally known that an expedition is being prepared.
