- Title:
- 37. Letter from Lord Elphinstone
- Scope & Content:
-
Sends the answers to Canning's letters to Captain Jones and Captain Kemball [not enclosed]. Captain Jones' letter was sent to Baghdad by mistake. The measures recommended by Captain Kemball are precisely those that have been adopted. Elphinstone is glad that Canning has taken a more favourable view of Jones' proceedings than Elphinstone did. It was a mistake to send mail by the 'Feroze', and a mistake that the officers landed at Bushire without previous communication with the Resident, but the mail was sent without knowledge of the Government of Bombay, and Jones was absent when the 'Feroze' arrived. Jones reports that the Armenian merchants and some of the Mahometan ones are anxious to escape from Bushire, but the Governor will not let them go. Some transports and steamers leave Bombay at once, and Sir Henry Leeke reports that all will be ready by the 5th. The Head Quarters will not leave until Canning's instructions have been received, and until the next English Mail has come in.
