- Title:
- 64. Letter from Lord Elphinstone
- Scope & Content:
-
Sends copies of two letters. Some reinforcements have come in from the Cape and Mauritius. The 89th were sent at once to Gugerat. Two more disarmings have taken place, at Hyderabad in Sind and at Kurrachee, both were well managed, and both were discovered by the fidelity of the native officers.
Enclosed: 1. Copy of a letter from Sir John Lawrence to Lord Elphinstone, Lahore, 5 Sep, announcing the arrival of the siege train at Delhi. Lawrence does not understand why Sir Patrick Grant has asked for a siege train from Bombay when there are already guns at Delhi and Philloor and Ferozepoor. He has given orders for more urgent material to be sent up, there are only three wretched steamers on the Indus. There is also a large siege train at Agra. There has been an attack on Murree which has been repulsed. Rumbeer Sing's troops have passed through Kurnaul, with cholera among them. Note by Lord Elphinstone, that Grant did not indent upon Bombay for a siege train, as far as Elphinstone knows.
2. Copy of a letter from H H Greathead to Sir John Lawrence, 1 Sep 1857, Camp, what should be done after Delhi falls has been discussed. Greathead recommends a Military Governor with supreme powers, and suggests General Nicholson. Realises the importance of returning troops to Lawrence, and suggests a re-distribution, into a garrison and two columns. Wilson will not commit himself to any pledges on the future of the Force, he is fully occupied with the work immediately before him. The concentration of troops at Benares seems to be for an attack on Lucknow via Fyzabad. The Camp at Delhi is well off for cash.
