- Title:
- 64a. Letter from Lord Elphinstone
- Scope & Content:
-
Writes that it is two months since he suggested that if some of the troops which are to touch at Ceylon were sent to Bombay, a column could be formed to advance through Gugerat and Rajpootana upon Delhi or Agra. Repeats his request for some troops to be sent to Bombay. The Joudpore Legion has now mutinied, and an ineffectual expedition has been sent against the Chief of Ahwa. The state of the Punjab is not satisfactory, and Sir John Lawrence has asked Elphinstone for a European Regiment, but there is not one to spare. Holkar's mutinous army continues at Mhow, Colonel Durand does not consider himself strong enough to disarm them. It is even possible that the Nana Sahib might put himself at the head of the Gwalior Contingent and raise insurrection in the Bombay Presidency. Sends an extract from a letter from Mr Frere. A telegraphic message has just come announcing a great victory near Agra by Colonel Greathed's column.
Enclosed: Extract of a letter from Mr Frere, Kurrachee, 19 Oct, commenting on the amount of work still to be done, and on the general feeling of insecurity in the Punjab. An eye-witness of the attack on Bolundshuhur gives a very different account from that in the newspapers, much less flattering to the British side.
